Education providers are institutions or establishments such as universities, local authorities or private training companies.

HVE is tailored to suit an evolving market place situation. The range of programmes and specialisations will thereforechange over time. New programmes will start and old ones will be discontinued as the labour market changes.

It is a characteristic of HVE that the businessand organisations tied to the programmes take an active part in the planning as well as the conducting of the programmes. Employers and industry representatives take part as members of the programmes’ steering committees. They may also take part through giving lectures, joining in projects or by offering work placements

Most HVE programmes offer work placement. In HVE, work placement is referred to as LIA (lärande i arbete), or Learning in a work environment.

All programmes are at a post-secondary level and qualify for student financial aid from the Swedish Board of Study Support (CSN). Some programmes charge tuition fees, although most of them are free of charge.

Completion of a one-year minimum programme results in a Higher Vocational Education Diploma. Completion of a two-year minimum programme results in an Advanced Higher Vocational Education Diploma.
