National vocational education and training (Nationell yrkesutbildning)
National vocational education and training (NVET) is a new type of vocational education and training at upper secondary level for adults, abbreviated in Swedish as NY. This new type of education is being introduced as a pilot activity that extends until 2026. The first round of applications was held in the spring of 2024 and the first study programmes start in the autumn of 2024.
About national vocational education and training
The main purpose of NVET (NY) study programmes is to respond to labour market needs and to complement the vocational education and training already provided today at upper secondary level. Another purpose is to enable students to quickly find work in deficit professions. Programmes are required to provide a theoretical grounding in a professional field and to be offered in collaboration with labour market and industry, with work placement (LIA) as an integral part of each programme.
The NVET programmes starting in 2024 are eligible for student finance, include 100-300 credits, take place on site (that is, not on-line) and programmes comprising at least 200 credits result in a qualification upon completion. Programmes will include work placement, or learning in a work environment (LIA). Programmes are organised by various training and education providers (schools).
National vocational education and training is part of the public education system. The pilot activity runs between 2024-2026. It is currently not known whether the programmes will become a permanent part of our educational offer. Students of NVET programmes that are given during this time period are not affected by the pilot activity and current regulation for NVET applies during the entire study period. This means that as a student, you have the right to student finance, you are covered by insurance and you also have the option to make a complaint to the Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education in case you are dissatisfied with a programme or education provider.
